Fafnir was just hanging out in his cave, when this little whimp Sigfried barged in with a sword. A scene from the ever popular Volsung saga, when the hero enters the cave of Fafnir.

I'm aware, by the way, that Sigfried did not simply walk in and kill Fafnir, that he dug a hole in the ground and waited and such, but come on, cut me some slack. I was going for drama, and a little guy hiding in a hole in the ground isn't exactly dramatic.

I love the way you merge three-dimentional realistic elements with two-dimentional (I'd call them "symbolic") elements. The sense of perspective is also great.

I know the story well. I notice there is a man's face in Fafnir the dragon's mouth, because he use to be a human or a dwarf, and he changed himself into a dragon after murdering his father to get the treasure with the cursed ring in it. You did an awesome job portraying the dragon and the warrior out to slay him. I think Sigurd would look better if you'd give him one of those horned Viking helmets. but it looks great the way it is.

Well, there is a really good reason Sigurd does not have a horned helmet, and that reason is that vikings did not wear them. Since this painting was for a project where I was supposed keep things as historically accuate as possible, I couldn't give him a helmet with horns.

I like how the dragon is simultaneously part of the scene and part of the border. Also, the face in its mouth freaks me out.

Ee! Volsung Saga stuff! I'm a fanboy for that particular branch of Norse mythology.

Fafnir looks impressive. Very well done, I am amazed at the runes!
