Queen Hel, with doggie by Relotixke Queen Hel, with doggie by Relotixke
Queen Hel was one of Loki's monstrous children. Her older brothers are Fenrir and Jormungand (The Fenris Wolf and the Midgard Serpent) She is young and beautiful on one side, and old and decayed on the other side.

In one version of her story, unlike her brothers, Hel lived in Asgard for a while, but eventually grew to hate it there, since the Aesir and the other gods and goddesses were sort of mean to her because of her strange appearance. So she petitioned Odin to send her somewhere else. Apparently being a good judge of character, Odin gave Hel the land of the dead, Nifelheim, to rule over. She has a hall with gates of iron, and a huge guard dog named Garm to keep an eye on things for her.

I have to say, I just saw the original piece hanging in the home of a friend... and this looks so much more amazing in person. This really is a very stellar, and very gripping piece.

Very beautiful piece of art.
The colours are selected just right and the background fits just perfectly!
And the difference between Hel's two-sided face looks amazing~

This is really beautiful. I love both the soft rendering on Hel and the more design-y look of the snakes in the background. :)

i really like how you pinted her and garm. even her cloth is half and half :) there are many stories about her, one says she was so ugly and repulsiwe, even with the beutiful half, that odin thought she'll never find a husband so he gave her the land of the dead to rule. well, it said also that her ''worst'' half was not only old, but actually it looked like dead, rotten and staff. one of most interesting stories in north mythology, for me :)

Garm is "doggie"? :D
I really like this one, it's noticeable that you know what you're drawing about! With the detail of the snakes in the background... very beautiful work.

This is absolutely gorgeous, I especially like the background with the snakes and the colour tones. Also her face stands out, both her expression and the two unlike sides of her face.

This is a beautiful picture. I especially love those stylized snakes behind them (love that coloring) as it helps push the more realistic Hel and Garm in the forefront while still lending an interesting background. Snake coiled in the hair is another cool touch. Awesome job.

Very, VERY nice! I'm a sucker for "Hel" art and this just went into my all-time top five favorite depictions of her.

Thanks! She's one of my favorite characters, so I went to a lot of trouble to paint her properly.
