**EDIT 3/26/08**
Wow, daily deviation!! Long have I waited for this day. Anyway, since there were some print requests for this piece, I've decided to put up a larger version and put it up for sale! So please, if you love me, buy a print (I have to pay my rent in a week!)
***************

Hraesevelg, who's name (according to some awfully friendly and helpful folks who commented) probably means something along the lines of "Corpse Swallower" which is pretty awesome.

Either way, he's either a jotun who turns himself into an eagle, or just a really huge eagle, who sits at the end of the sky, before the gates of Nifelheim, and flaps his wings. This blows cold wind and frost into the world, causing all manner of winter storms and bad weather.

If you are looking at this and thinking "he kinda looks like a chicken" it's because I was greatly influenced by some old norse weathervanes, and the birds on those were probably roosters.

Daily Deviation"~Relotixke creates a brilliant interpretation of a less known element of the Norse mythology. Made with an excellent painting technique, a very clever composition and a stylized bird, Hraesvelg, the winter eagle fittingly recalls the ancient original Norse art." Great job on the celtic knotts, those must have been a lot of work!

I'm loving you're Norse mythology and your art revolving around it, it's a lot of fun to see origonal artwork.

Excellent work, and I really appreciate the skill and time you used on the Celtic knots and Norweigan name. You obviously took great care in the subtle details, which can really be pain staking, especially with traditional media. Excellent work, and I'll definitely be giving this a :+fav:

I'm Danish, but never heard about this one before so I got curious and looked it up in some of my mythology books and then the internet. As you already know, there are different ways of spelling it and Hræsvelgr seems to be the most common, also used in Danish sources and also yes, Ræsvelg in Danish. But it's old language and doesn't make immediate sense. I'm guessing that Svelg is an old form of svælge/svælg which means "to swallow" or "throat", this especially makes sense with the corpse eater. I've seen nothing about white beak. The sources also say a gigantic eagle, maybe the same which sits in the top of Yggdrasil. Just a comment on the meaning.

It's an amazing piece, really well done and just illustrates the topic at hand so well. :-)

Oh awesome! It could very well be corpse swallower then, that would make sense.

I had seen his name written as Hraesvelgr, but I wasn't sure if the r at the end was actually part of the word or not. Either way, awesome. Thanks so much for sharing this information!

You're welcome, it's quite interesting. I'm working on a news feature with images of norse mythology and I'm definitely going to include this. :-)
